Presenter: Mireille Jacobson, Ph.D., Paul Merage School of Business, UC Irvine

About the Speaker:  Mireille Jacobson is an associate professor of economics and public policy and the Director of the Center for Health Care Management and Policy at The Merage School of Business at the University of California, Irvine.  She is also a research associate in the Health Care program at the National Bureau of Economic Research. She has a diverse portfolio of research united by an interest in understanding how health care policies affect well-being.  Past projects analyze the impact of Medicare payment policy for cancer drugs on the oncology market and the impact of Medicare coverage on medical expenditure risk.  Her work has been funded by the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Aging and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and has appeared in The New England Journal  of Medicine, Health Affairs, The Quarterly Journal of Economics, American Economic Journal – Applied Economics and American Economic Journal – Economic Policy.  Professor Jacobson received her B.A. in economics from the University of Chicago and her Ph.D., also in economics, from Harvard University.

Course Relevance:  To appropriately serve their clients, insurance carrier agents, brokers, and others who are duly licensed to serve California’s insurance buyers should understand the current evidence on high deductible health plans.

Course Objective:  Provide a deeper understanding of high deductible health plans. What are they? Who has them?  How have these trends changed over time?  How does it affect utilization and other outcomes? How do we expect the trends to change in the future?
